The PlayStation 4 is a king of the last generation, and it looks like it might be heading out into the sunset soon (משחקי פלייסטיישן). But it still has plenty of games to keep you occupied before it leaves the scene altogether. And while Sony isn't planning any major console refreshes until 2020, that doesn't mean we're not getting plenty of new PS4 titles this year, including a few which are sure to make your list of must-play games for the next generation.
The Top 10 Must-Play PlayStation Games of 2020
There are plenty of great games on the PS4 that are sure to impress, but we've picked ten that will really get your adrenaline pumping. We've ranked them based on their technical prowess and what they can bring to your gaming experience, whether that's through story, gameplay, or something entirely different.
Assassin's Creed Origins
Taking place in the Middle Ages, Assassin's Creed Origins is a big-budget adventure game from Ubisoft that lets you play as a number of different characters in a sweeping open-world. Despite it being a little more linear than other games in the franchise, it's worth playing because of its impressive visuals and excellent storytelling.
Kingdom Come: Deliverance
Set in medieval Bohemia, Kingdom Come: Deliverance is a fantastic game that will have you clamouring to return to the game again and again. Featuring stunningly detailed environments and a fantastic soundtrack, it's one of the best games to get into if you want an action-packed adventure.
It Takes Two
With a heavy emphasis on cooperative gameplay and a dedication to making split-screen split-screen play the mainstay of the game, It Takes Two is a truly landmark achievement. The only way to progress is to work with a partner, and as such, this co-op game is one of the best PS4 games for 2 players.
It's also one of the best games to show off your brand-new PlayStation 5 console - boasting some of the most dense and beautiful environments we've ever seen on a game console and some of the most over-the-top weapons you'll see in a shooter. It's also an excellent example of how a title can be optimised to take advantage of the DualSense pad and pump out some great controller sounds too.
Defcon 2
It might not be as big and spectacular as some of the other titles in this top 10, but if you're after a more realistic-looking open world, you can't do much better than Defcon 2. The reworked game offers an incredibly immersive and engaging experience, with incredible character movement that really suits the environments it takes you to.
God of War Ragnarok
The sequel to 2018's God of War might not be as huge as some of the other titles in this top 10 but it still packs some serious punch, and is easily one of the most high-end PS4 games you can grab right now. It uses some of the same tech tricks to hide loading in clever ways, and if you're a fan of the first game, it's hard not to be drawn in by this gorgeously polished PS4 sequel.
If you're looking for the best PlayStation games to play on your new PS5 console, then this list is just for you. It's a great collection of the best of the PlayStation's current roster, and even some great timed exclusives too.
It Takes Two – Co-operative Duo's Dedication
If you and your gaming pal are looking for a genuinely co-operative experience, then look no further than It Takes Two. A landmark in the cooperative genre, this game was designed around split-screen play and relies on you and your pal to progress through its story together.
It's a fantastically fun game, and one of the best 2 player PS4 games I've ever played. I love how it mixes the thrills of skateboarding with the grit of a survival horror experience. It's also incredibly well-designed, with a gorgeous story that focuses on friendship and family rather than simply focusing on killing zombies.
Assassin's Creed Odyssey – Open World Action
If open-world games are your thing, then Assassin's Creed Odyssey is an excellent choice for the PlayStation 5. Set in a fictional history between Sparta and Athens, this game sees you take on the role of either a male or female mercenary as you try to reunite your family.
Ghost of Tsushima – The Samurai Code
If you love old-school Japan and samurai fighting, then Ghost of Tsushima is an absolute gem. Its combination of beautiful graphics, sensitive handling of historical motifs and excellent balance means that it's one of the most satisfying games to play on the PlayStation 4.
The Last of Us – Classic Sci-Fi Adventure
If open-world adventures are your thing, then Red Dead Redemption 2 is an absolute must. It's one of the most ambitious games I've ever played, taking place in a world that feels like it could have been ripped straight from 1899 America. With a stunning storyline and an open-world that's as vast as it is evocative, RDR 2 is easily the most immersive PS4 game I've ever played.
GTA Online – Multiplayer Heists and Stories
If you want to take on heists with your friends on the go, then GTA Online is a perfect choice. It's free to play on the PS5, and it's got a whole host of slickly produced missions to sink your teeth into.
Gran Turismo 7 – Competitive Driving
If you're a car lover and want to take the driving wheel to a whole new level, then this is the game for you. It has a ton of cars to choose from and 34 tracks for you to master, and it also features local split-screen and online multiplayer modes so that you can get roaring with your friends.
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2 – Remastered
If it's old school, then it's got to be Tony Hawk's Pro Skater! Activision and Vicarious Visions have remastered the first two Tony Hawk games to make them look absolutely incredible. And, of course, they've added all the cool new tricks and features that gamers have been waiting for!
